Clausura 2007 Quarterfinals 1st leg: Tigres 1-3 Chivas

The holy flock had a very important victory away at the University Stadium of Monterrey, beating Tigres 1-3 for the first leg of the Mexican League quarterfinals (yes, the league is rather strange).  Especially noteworthy is Omar Esparza’s excellent goal (the 3rd), since the kid is 19 years old.

If the team doesn’t screw up this weekend, we’ll be up in the semis, where we shall meet the winner of the América-Atlas playoff series.

17th Matchday: Jaguares 1-0 Chivas

Chivas lost against Jaguares in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas in the last game of the regular season, but qualified to the playoffs as 1st in its group and second in the general standings.

Omar Bravo made history as the first Mexican top goalscorer in the league since 2001, and also broke a long-standing curse, since the last Chivas top scorer was Salvador Reyes in 1961.

In other league news, Santos avoided relegation, but Querétaro went down (the team with the lowest ratio of points won vs. matches played during the last 3 years goes to Primera A).  The playoffs will start as soon as the wildcard matches are played this week.

16th Matchday: Chivas 4-0 Veracruz

Chivas really had a flawless performance on Saturday, beating the Red Sharks at home, including a brace by Omar Bravo and further goals by Bofo Bautista (who was involved in the other 3 as well), and rookie Xavier Báez.  The team played an excellent game and if it weren’t for the missed chances, could have even doubled the score.

Bravo, Medina and Bofo should go to Europe after the summer, especially if they perform well at the Copa América.  Whichever team buys them should get all three, as they are much more effective when playing together.

Now let’s see how they do in the return leg of the CONCACAF Champion’s Cup final mid-week, as the winner goes to Japan.

CONCACAF Champions Cup Final: Chivas 2-2 Pachuca

In an excellent game, where both teams really played at a tempo and standard befitting a Confederation final, Chivas and Pachuca tied at Jalisco Stadium.  Given the result, both teams still have chances to go through to Japan when the second leg is played on the 25th.

Omar Bravo scored a brace, but couldn’t stop Chivas from tying a game in which they started off strongly.

15th Matchday: Atlas 0-2 Chivas

With very few games to go before the playoffs (yes, the Mexican league, besides having two championships per year, also has playoffs) Chivas continued in good form, beating Atlas at Jalisco Stadium (the home they both share) in the Guadalajara derby.  Chivas is now second in the general standings and has a place guaranteed in the deciding stages of the season.

The first goal by Alberto Venado Medina is a beauty.
